Maksymum Stars U16 AAA Qualify for NYS Championship
The Maksymum Stars U16 AAA team, formed in partnership between Rochester Youth Hockey and Maksymum Hockey played in the NYS Playdowns in Amherst. The Maksymum Stars coached by Dave Maksymiu and assisted by Jared Blank went 4-1 over the weekend. In their first game Saturday vs. St. Francis the Stars dominated play and won 11-1. Maksymum was led by a four goal game from Jimmy Pelton and four point game from Chris Peters. Liam Flaherty had 3 points to lead the defensemen. Saturday afternoon Maksymum beat the Depew Saints 3-1. Pelton, Peters and Austin Pieniaszek scored goals. Defenseman Matthew Buchbinder added 2 assists and Shane Fuller stopped 21 shots to earn the win.
Sunday, Maksymum faced the Rochester Monarchs and won a spirited game 6-3. The Stars were led by 2 goals each from Chris Peters and Nick Boyd. Jake Schultz and Joe Saraceni also scored and Monty Cunningham made 30 saves to get the win. With the win the Stars won their division preliminary round and advanced to the final 4 on Monday.
Sunday’s emotional win over the Monarchs led to a Monday morning battle with W. Seneca. The Stars started slow going down 2-0 and getting into penalty trouble. With the Stars down 3-1 late in the third period Ritchie Francis scored to get the Stars going. Jake Schultz tied the game at 3-3 with the goaltender pulled to force overtime. After a scoreless 5 minute overtime West Seneca won the game in the second round of the shootout. Despite the loss the Stars never quit and had a strong game on defense from Matt Damelio and Austin Guyett.
In the final game to determine seeding and guarantee a state berth the Stars faced the Depew Saints for the second time. Rochester rose to the occasion with a balanced attack. The line of Nick Pulli, Zach Nowak and Tyler Cavalier was buzzing all game with Cavalier notching his first U16 goal. The Stars were led by 2 goals from Joe Saraceni. Christian Vella had a goal and an assist and continued his strong forechecking. Defensemen Matt Buchbinder, Matt Damelio, Liam Flaherty, Jared Kachaylo, Kevin O’Brien and Jake Schultz were outstanding moving the puck and limiting the Saints opportunities. The team is 18-11-3 on the season and is home this weekend playing a 5 game showcase at TSC at MCC.
